Down on the Quay and the Old Town, the streets are narrow, historic and often one-way, with a working port at the end of them — a lorry can’t just sit where it likes, so we plan the loading spot ahead. Out on Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs (BH13), the challenge flips: gated drives, tight peninsula roads that gridlock in summer, and apartment blocks where the lift and the loading bay need booking. Across the water, Hamworthy (BH15) and Upton (BH16) are calmer, more suburban runs — driveways and estates, but sometimes a long carry from the kerb.
Flats, harbour streets and summer
A lot of Poole moves are flats, from new blocks at the Quay to converted houses in Parkstone and Branksome. Upper floors with a shared stair come down to the right crew size and proper protection on the walls — we’d rather send an extra pair of hands than rush a sofa round a tight landing. And then there’s the season: from late spring the town fills with visitors and the roads near the beach slow to a crawl, so if you’re moving in summer we’ll pick timings that dodge the worst of it.
Getting in and out of Poole
The A35 and A350 tie Poole to the rest of Dorset and up to the A31, so a move on to Bournemouth, Dorchester or further afield is a straightforward run. Heading abroad from Poole?
